Yoga is a world-renowned multifaceted discipline. It has something special to offer to each & everybody- a unique combination to suit the varied needs & requirements. Children especially are extremely fortunate if they get an exposure to this discipline in their early growing & maturing years. A strong yogic foundation will help them excel in their studies, sports, extra curricular activities, social life & moral conduct. World over teachers & parents are understanding the significance of yoga, hence today it is a part of several schools & educational institutions. The foundation to a brighter & happier future of a child has already been successfully laid.

Yoga is beneficial to the children in the following ways:

  1. Children become physically strong. They are rarely prone to ailments & can wholeheartedly participate in games, sports, group activities, events, picnics- camps, & competitions.

  2. Their mind gets sharpened hence they excel in their studies. It becomes easier for them to concentrate & participate in class. Homework too gets completed with much ease. Also they become eager to know & explore more about the world around them.

  3. There is a drastic improvement in their behavior & relationships. As the overall thinking becomes positive & pure, their equations with fellow classmates, teachers, parents, becomes more satisfying & fulfilling. They learn the language of peace, love, cooperation, adjustment that is a rare phenomenon in today’s day & age.

  4. Yoga also benefits the parents, teachers, & the school as a whole:

  5. Parents have the huge responsibility of raising their children in the best possible manner. They practically start living for their children, aiming to give them the best education, facilities & unalloyed happiness in life. Moral values, codes of conduct, social rules & regulations are invariably imparted by the parents to the children. A physically, mentally & spiritually sound parent is an ideal inspiration for the child. Residing in a happy peaceful family a child can flourish & thrive in life & face all future circumstances with maturity, poise, & dignity.

  6. Teachers are like second mothers of the students. They inculcate the most cherished education to the students not only through the subjects they teach, but also by their behavior. Children learn most of the things through observation. A calm, composed, motivating teacher will always be more appealing compared to a strict, grumpy, stressed out one. Hence if yoga can contribute towards the teacher’s wellbeing then this positivity will definitely spread to the students & also increase their faith & confidence in their teachers. They will in turn obey the teachers out of love & respect rather than fear & obligation.

  7. A progressive school always aims at the upliftment of all its students- it desires that each & every student explores his/her utmost potential. This task is partly taken care of by yoga if it becomes an integral aspect of the school. The school can be proud of the fact that they are leaving no stone unturned for the progress of the students & in turn it attains the title of being considerate, caring & responsible.

Yoga Tips

Childhood: the best years of ones life- years full of beautiful explorations, wonderful new learning, new budding friendships, uninhibited fun, unobstructed creativity, blissful freedom & pure- sweet innocence. Yoga simply makes a child’s life a little more convenient, pleasant, & colorful. Learning becomes convenient as ones concentration levels increase, life becomes pleasant as one learns to think positively & live happily, & color is added as ones capacity to explore, understand, participate, cooperate, love & respect one & all increases.

  1. Just Breathe:   a simple sure shot success mantra. It is a mantra of inner awareness, which leads to external excellence. Sitting erect or lying down flat on the back with eyes shut you must inhale- pause, inhale- pause, inhale- pause & then exhale completely in one go. While inhaling the chest is completely expanded & while exhaling the abdomen is completely contracted. This enables a smooth revitalizing essential energy flow through out the body.

  2. Power Nap:   a perfect break for students, parents, & teachers in their fast paced life. 15 minutes of relaxation leaves one feeling fresh & rejuvenated. Lying down flat on the back with hands & legs spread slightly apart you must with eyes shut & using internal awareness focus first on the right leg then inhale- exhale deeply 10 times while consciously giving the internal suggestion relax while exhaling. After 10 breaths the focus is shifted to left leg- hips & thighs- back- chest & abdomen- right hand- left hand- shoulders & neck- face & head. Then once the whole body is beautifully relaxed 10 deep breathes of inhalation-exhalation where the focus is only on the breath & while inhaling one internally utters the mantra ‘so’, while exhaling ‘ham’.

  3. Candle Gazing:   concentration, receptiveness, & calmness follow this beautiful simple technique. Placing a candle exactly at your eye level on a stool & gazing at it from a meter’s distance you must involve your complete attention into the serene flame of the candle. Purifying tears dwell down ones eyes. Shutting the eyes gently for a few seconds, you must again begin to gaze at the flame. This repeated 4 to 5 times as per each capacity not over straining the eyes opens the mind & intellect. An asana is effective if it is performed with full concentration, conviction, & the final pose is maintained to the best of ones capacity. Its effects are seen with repeated- regular correct practice:

  4. Captivating confidence & humility:   Stand erect with poise & dignity placing feet together & hands by the side of the body. Gazing at an eye level point slowly raise the hands & feet together until one balances on the toes & the hands are at the side of the ears with the fingers reaching out for the sky. A complete stretch being felt in the entire body. Maintain with a smile. Then gently placing the feet on the floor & bending from the waist region lower the hands placing it on the toes. The complete body being bent forward & the neck hanging lose. Maintain with a smile. Then without raising the legs bring the hands once again upto the ear level & gently to the starting position. Rising high signifies confidence & bending forward humility. Swami Vivekanada is an ideal example. This unique stretching-relaxing combination invariably tones all the muscles & vital organs of the body leading you to health & happiness.

  5. Steadiness & integrity:   Sitting erect in a cross-legged position you place your hands in Namaste mudra. Then gently raise you hand towards the sky focusing on a point at eye level. Now the elbows are straight, Namaste mudra intact, a complete stretch is felt right from the bottom of the back covering the entire back, to the armpits, shoulders & hands. Face is completely straight. Maintain with a smile. Then feeling the same stretch bend from the bottom of the back, without raising the buttocks & place the head, hands, & Namaste mudra on the floor. Feel the abdomen being contracted. Maintain with a smile. Slowly raise your hands bringing it near the ears with hands stretched upwards. Then gently return to the starting position. When erect a symbol of steadiness & when bent forward a mark of humility. An essential quality in growing children. Mahatma Gandhi is an ideal example.
